Camp America New Zealand

Types Of Camps

Camps are usually in the countryside and are often sited in areas of outstanding natural beauty. Most have a lakeside setting, allowing swimming, sailing and water-skiing. Other activities include archery, field sports, science, nature study, crafts and outdoor adventure. Sleeping mostly in cabins, as part of a group, the camp experience is seen as an essential part of an American child's development. As representatives from different cultures, Camp America participants are fundamental to the campers experience. There are more than 12,000 summer camps in the USA each with their own unique atmosphere and philosophy. Your skills and interests will be carefully matched to a camp that will suit you. These are the main types of camps

Agency Camps

Owned by an agency for example YMCA or Boys and Girls Clubs.

Day Camps

Children are only at camp during the day; staff may live on camp or with host families.

Learning Disabled Camps

This includes attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity and dyslexia etc.

Disadvantaged Camps

For people from an urban, low income, homeless or difficult background.

Girl Scouts (Guides) Camps

Camping in beautiful rural areas for girl scouts and guides. You don't need to have experience in this area to be placed here.

Private/Independant Camps

Owned by an individual or family; the camp is their livelihood. Because these camps have extensive facilities and are expensive, they tend to attract the children of wealthy parents.

Religious Camps

A small number of camps have a religious theme, which may be either Christian or Jewish. It does not mean you will be teaching religion if this type of camp hires you - you could still be teaching water-skiing - unless you have experience in religious studies of course. You don't have to be Jewish/Christian to work at a Jewish/Christian camp (and you won't 'end up' Jewish or Christian at the end of camp!)

Special Needs Camps

These camps cater to both adults and children with varying levels of cognitive and physical challenges.
