A Shirt Filled with Memories!

Myuniform.jpg

The feeling of putting on any uniform for the first time is an incredible feeling.

But nothing quite compares to the feeling of putting on your summer camp uniform for the first time ever.

Because I was one of the lucky few who headed to camp a month early I was allowed to help in the uniform shop. During a huge clean out we found these tank tops that Joey our camp director designed in the sixties - they were a real treasure. Although they were different to our camp shirts we could wear them at camp whenever we felt like it. I went on to buy Camp Blue Ridge pyjamas and a hoodie to cheek them out!

The moment I received my camp uniform my thoughts were “wow this is really happening, I made it”. It’s true even though I had flown half way around the world I still hadn’t come to the realisation that camp was just about to start. That moment I put my uniform on I instantly understood what being a camp councellor was all about.

When I put that shirt on I became part of a team, a group of people who were once strangers whose sole purpose was to create the most incredible summer for the kids. We are the most spectacular group of people they have ever hired!

Twenty five of us are already retuning to be councillors for the coming season yay!

Our uniforms begin as a beautiful crisp white shirt with a camp Blue Ridge logo on the front. The fact our t-shirts also had the word staff on them made us feel like we were on top of the world. My shirt is no longer as white as it started, it’s now a stained yellow dirt colour – yummy!

Each camp councellor was given two staff shirts to wear with pride. A few tie dyed their shirts to hide the stains. But not me I wear those stains like they were meant to be there, with ever mark there is a story.

Like the time one of the kids squirted me with a blackcurrant juice box or the time I slid down the hill by the low ropes course because I have two left feet. Every mark made on that uniform of mine gives me another memory to look back on.

These are my shirts love the tye die don’t you?

I still remember the day we all put on our staff shirts and together we welcomed our first group of campers. The smiles on our faces matched the children’s grins of excitement, we were strangers but united by this place we all grew to love Camp Blue Ridge. We all knew that with these shirts camp a great deal of responsibility, which each of us took seriously.

Because of this position we were in you would expect that we would be nervous, but surprisingly I felt really comfortable like it was meant to be.

Because it was!
