Application Tips & Tricks

Everyone wants to know how to get accepted into Camp America

And I'll be honest with you - we don't accept everyone.... And I'll try and explain why in this blog. But I'll also tell you how to raise your chances of getting in, even if you don't have all the skills we are looking for. Skills are NOT everything!

Camp America Camps want the best staff.

So if they can choose from three counsellors to lead the rock climbing, and one of the three has a big smile on their photo, and the application video exudes confidence and enthusiasm, then they will choose you. If your photos (as part of your application) show you rock climbing then that will strengthen the written part of your skills section about your rock climbing. But if you've written about how well you can rock climb, and your photo shows you playing golf, or standing in front of a waterfall...then you see this doesn't support your written section.

The skills the camps hire for are dictated by what they provide at camp for the kids and how popular that activity is. So for example...waterskiing is more popular with the kids than arts and crafts (unless it's raining). Horse riding is more popular than dance. Why? Because they can do arts and crafts and dance at home fairly easily. Not so easy for them (and more costly for parents) for the kids to go horse riding or water skiing during term time. Camp is about getting away from home and doing stuff in the summer holidays that they don't get to do at home normally.

If you don't do a video, if you decide it's too hard, then camp will most likely also be too hard for you too.

You're applying for something way outside your comfort zone so you may as well start now. If you find it's too hard to find photos of you doing your skills, then grab a friend and a camera and go take some! See how creative you can be if you put your mind to it.

If you skimp on your written application, or don't check for grammar and typos, or worse all three...then camps will not even give you a chance, they'll skip right to the next application. This is a job application, it's not a holiday. The camps make ALL their money in the summer three months so this is a vital part of their lifeblood - they want the best staff! They won't just take 'anyone'. They want to know if you're going to fit in to their camp and also if you will fit in with the rest of the staff (the staff they have already hired and the staff returning).

Don't close yourself off to camps...just because a camp is Christian and you are not - don't say 'oh I don't want that camp'

...NEWSFLASH - they won't hire you if they don't think you'll fit in (they'll know you are not Christian) ! After all they still need staff to teach all the skills at camp...and they'll hire Christians who are comfortable teaching bible study for that part of camp.

If you are under 21 you can't drive boats or vehicles in USA.

The insurance excesses are too high. So if you want to teach waterskiing and you're 19 it may not happen. Keep this in mind if you are under 21, and focus on your other skills and think about the fact that they won't hire you to drive the ski boats. Most camps have the driver teach the waterskiing too.

Why don't camps want 18 year olds?

You've seen that we can only take a few 18 year olds right? Why is that? Well the news is worse if you are female because the biggest group of applicants are 18 and female. And worldwide we can only place so many 18 year old females (boys camps don't hire female counsellors usually).

So if you are 18, everything I have just said applies to you x 1000!!

You need to stand out in the crowd, and it's a big crowd....so I suggest getting some teaching/coaching experience. Camps don't like to hire 18 year olds for various reasons...their parents usually take over in the communications - that shows a lack of maturity - a bad sign.

They're looking for adults, not children. This is a job not a student exchange. 18 years olds tend to get more homesick, for the same reasons. If you leave camp early they are short a staff member. 18 year olds have less life experience. It's a fact. Camps like life experience, it counts for alot.

So if your Mum has called our office and enquired, if your Dad is filling in your forms, if they know more about what Camp America is than you do - then I suggest you withdraw your application or make some changes pronto and get stuck into this yourself.

That is the BIGGEST warning sign we get. If we get parents calling us, and not you, we start seriously looking at your application for maturity levels. Sound tough?

Yep - working in America is tough. We only want the tough ones. In America there is no three strikes and you're out, if you break the rules, you get arrested or sent home. No warning. This is the real world.

On the flip side, if you take our advice and follow our instructions, keep in touch with us, ask questions, stay on our Facebook page for news, then you will most likely be exactly the person we are looking for.

If this post scares the crap out of you..maybe you'll be better waiting a year or digging deep and see how far outside your comfort zone you can go. It'll be the best thing you've ever done.

We see some amazing Kiwis apply for Camp America...and we do our very best to make sure you get a fantastic camp job. But if you submit your application ignoring our guidelines, and your interviewer's, then you may not be chosen by a camp, or may not even get an interview. That's why we are here to help.
