Comfort Zone - does Camp America push the edges?

Camp America gives you an opportunity to get out of your comfort zone. Is that good? We think so.

  • You are going to be experiencing multiple new things, culturally, physically and mentality.
  • No more sleep-ins until 10am, you will now be up at 6.30-7am daily getting both your kids and yourself ready for the day.
  • No more weetbix and marmite on toast for breakfast, think now anything from donuts and poptarts to bacon and hashbrowns.
  • You will be spending your days not just with a group of kids – whether they are the same kids for a day, a week or a month, but with the same group of counsellors and staff for the length of time you are at camp.
  • Throw in new slang words, tornado warnings, huge Fourth of July parades, driving on the right side of the road and there is just so much to take in.

But remember that you are also a new and shiny toy for the Americans as well.

Just your accent and the way you say and do certain things will be very cool for them. Let the kids know about your life, the town you grew up in and what you would do on a typical weekend. We all know America is a pretty amazing place and it may have completely opened your eyes to how small little NZ is but don't criticize life in NZ.

By the way the kids at my camp thought that we were part of Australia and rode Kangaroos to school...see what wild and wonderful stuff your kids know about NZ.

Remember too that it's highly probable that you won't know anyone else at camp, so they have no idea if you are shy or confident normally....so get out there and have a great time, make the most of every opportunity you can, if you belly flop at the lake rather than perfect that triple back flip you have been trying to master, your kids will love you the more for giving it an go than not trying at all...and more often than not they will probably appreciate the belly flop more!

Get outside your comfort zone and try stuff that you never thought you would...you never know what opportunities this may open up for you in the future!

What did you do at camp you thought you never ever do?
