HEART, MIND AND SOUL - Summer Camp Counselor Tips

It’s about time I give you a step by step guide on how to be a wicked camp counselor right?

Well truth is there isn’t a step by step guide but I can definitely give you a few tips on how to rock the summer this year as a Camp America Counselor!

  1. Bring stuff with you from your home to share with the campers, This will help them to understand where you come from. I brought a bunch of photos this was cool for the campers to see as when I spoke about my friends or family they were able to put a face to the name.
  2. There is a possibility you may end up losing a kid at some point during the summer. The important thing here is to not panic, take a deep breath you will soon remember that you forgot to pick them up from the infirmary ten minutes ago.
  3. If your campers are quiet it is NEVER a good sign, you may be thinking “wow what wonderful campers all getting along and not making a sound” I am just letting you know you are actually at level 120% for impending DOOM! Being pranked by your campers is in your near future.
  4. Learn to love your camp as much as the campers do feel it in your HEART, MIND AND SOUL! Embrace it after all it’s your home for the next nine weeks.
  5. SMILE while around the campers, save the tears for your co-councillors they are probably feeling the same
  6. Now I know that most of you will want to experience a summer romance that will make your heart skip a beat or two but please... refrain from too much PDOA (public display of affection). Also it is likely that your campers will try play match maker.
  7. Learn your campers names sooner rather than later, sorry but universal names like “MATE” and “BRO” won’t work on these kid-o’s
  8. Have a few easy games to play up your sleeves for down time, this will help you to get to know your campers and will also stop them from any possible home sickness. "If one starts crying they all start, its like a domino effect"
  9. Be knowledgeable and know what’s going on, If you know what’s going on the campers will see you as a little information centre. This will also give them another reason to look up to you as being a role model. + GET A WATCH
  10. On your first day of camp make a bucket list of ten things you guys want to do as a cabin this is possibly one of the coolest things to do during camp. (We made ours a secret and only our campers knew about it) The bucket list had things like… have a movie night, eat candy till our tummy’s hurt, dress up the counselors for dinner in crazy outfits and so much more!

That’s just a few things you can do and keep in mind to make sure you have a smooth but fun summer!

If you have anything you would like to add feel free to pop it below. Who is going to get the best counselor award this coming summer?

IS IT YOU?
