5 Life Skills You’ll Learn as Camp Counselors with Camp America

Summer Camp with Camp America is one of those things you really have to experience - words cannot describe it at all!

But - on a more logical note... if you need to convince your parents to give you money for Camp America as your brthday pressie - here are some reasons you'll end up a better person after experiencing Camp America.

1.Teamwork – This is a skill that is important to have in every part of your life. Whether you are with your family, friends, or workmates in any given scenario, knowing how to respectfully work with people who represent all walks of life, ages, ethnicities, and ranges of ability is one of the most important skills you can acquire. As camp counselors with Camp America at summer camp, you may not always truly ‘like’ everyone with whom you will need to work, but you must learn to make your personal feelings secondary to the needs of the group, learn about each member's skills and abilities regardless of your feelings about them, and work to ensure that each member is able to add to the end result of each activity you face together. Any group result is always at it's best when each member of a diverse group works together as a team. At summer camp you'll be one big team - the staff - the children, the camp directors.... all working together.

2. Time Management – Whether you are placed at a day camp or will spend every day and night with your campers, it may seem like you’ll have a ton of surplus time on your hands, but you will be surprised how quickly and easily the days and nights will fly by. It is important to carry out each of your daily planned projects, and equally necessary to get plenty of rest and relaxation, and spend time getting to know other camp counselors with Camp America plus American staff too outside of the counselor roles, so this is where time management becomes an important skill to flex. Try and plan your time carefully so that the balance doesn’t fall too far in either direction, even though the summer camp day will mostly be planned for you, making sure that you get the most out of every opportunity that you are presented with, and when you return home you’ll not have any regrets!

3. Integrity – the best way to show integrity as a camp counselor with Camp America is to model the behavior that you’d expect to see from your campers. Try to be sure that your campers never hear you curse or argue, see you being a sore loser, mocking others, modeling a poor attitude in general or practicing bad habits like smoking. Although none of us are perfect, children tend to pick up on the negative things we do even when we think we’re being discreet, so be sure to act as a great role model and camp leader because your represent Camp America, New Zealand and your age group in general. The kids will love you for it. Practicing what you preach is very important when you are leading impressionable young children, and the ‘do as I say, not as I do’ sort of teaching never really works - especially with kids.

4. Problem-Solving Skills – As camp counselors with Camp America, you will spend a whole lot of time working with children, and if you’ve spent any time around children or working with them in the past, you know that just because they are pint-sized people doesn’t mean that their problems are always pint-sized as well. Campers may bring problems from home, find problems between themselves and another camper once they arrive – or something as simple as figuring out which dinner utensil to use for carrots, so prepare to handle each situation with patience and care. And hey, if a situation is handled early and successfully, it may never have an opportunity to grow into a problem that needs your solving!

5. Healthy Habits – There’s no doubt that working as camp counselors with Camp America at a summer camp somewhere in USA will keep you on your toes, physically, mentally, and perhaps even emotionally at times. You will get plenty of exercise, but also it is important to eat well and get plenty of sleep in order to maintain the tight schedule you'll be on each day at camp. This routine will become second nature to you once you get past the first few days, which is a fantastic model to follow once you return home from your placement at Camp America. A healthy lifestyle allows for the energy it takes to excel in life, no matter where it takes you next! While it may not always be easy to resist the pizza and extra cheese in the dining hall - try and get an extra helping of fruit and veggies when you can. Especially on your time off.

Think you'd like to get some extra life skills to equip you for the future and add a little bit of something different to your CV?
