The Highs and Lows of the Camp America Experience

The Highs and Lows of the Camp America Experience

Author -  Liana Smith

There really isn’t much that can prepare you for the Camp America experience.

There’s just so much that goes on within those unforgettable few months its really quite incomprehensible for those unlucky enough to find themselves outside the camp ‘bubble’.

While travelling by yourself or throwing yourself completely out of your normal routine within a new country can be daunting – it’s important to keep an open mind, and truly embrace everything that comes your way, to avoid those thoughts crowding your mind and effecting the overall experience.

While 99% of the summer is about fun, meeting new people, exploring and so much more - there’s always low points some people are likely to meet to some degree like getting homesick, feeling out of place or doubting exactly what it is that you’ve gotten yourself into! It’s important to remember that we’re all human – emotions running high in crazy situations are normal and of course you may miss home, that’s your comfort zone!

It’s at these times that I believe the most memorable lessons you learn throughout your summer happen. For me, this involved learning how to truly put myself out there more in order to develop the sort of friendships needed to combat that homesickness, throwing myself into crazy situations to learn about the Jewish religion at Camp to feel more at home and just adapting my mindset to be able to take one everything that was thrown at me.

But you know what, while those lows definitely hitthe highs more than made up for them! Experiencing a new religion, developing an appreciation for a different way of life, creating incredible friendships, spending the days doing what you love on the lake and, overall I guess, having an unbeatable adventure and living life to its complete fullest is really what camps all about!

Camp is exactly what you think it will be, and nothing like it at the same time - It’s going to a strange new place but feeling at home within a week.

It’s throwing yourself out of your comfort zone but feeling more comfortable to express yourself with a bunch of strangers than most of your peers.

Most of all though - camp is about truly losing yourself in the adventure and immersing yourself so completely that, by the end of the summer, you’re still the same person (though with noticeably more tie-dye and friendship bracelets...) but so much more in touch with your overall self you can’t help but grow as a person and look towards your next great adventure in life.
