What Skills do I have to offer Camp America?

What Skills do I have to offer Camp America?

Author -  Stephanie Murray

When I began my application for Camp America I read that there was over 200 skills wanted by camps

I had a brief look through the most sought after skills and was slightly disheartened as there was nothing listed in those skill sets that I had much experience with or that I was passionate about.

When the time came to fill out my top three skills I was highly surprised to find animal care as one of the possibilities. Finally I had found a skill which best suited me! I grew up on a farm and had just finished my Bachelor of AgriScience majoring in agriculture, so the skill of animal care could not have been more appropriate.

After nervously waiting to be placed and close to giving up hope, 6 months later I was finally approached by a Camp to become their sustainability counsellor.

This role could have not been more fitting for me, I was the carer for the camps farm animals (chickens, goats, a pig and a donkey), looked after the camps vegetable garden – teaching basic gardening to the kids and running the highly popular activity of cooking in the wood oven using freshly picked ingredients from the garden.

Upon arriving at camp I was highly surprised at the different skills we all brought to camp. Everyone is in one way or another a professional in the activity which we teach to campers- from knife throwing, wood splitting, black smithing, gaga, parkour, MMA, slack lining, DJ’ing and restoring classic American hot rods- together we cover all of the skill sets you could possibly imagine!

Everyone brings a unique skill set to camp!

With such an array of different skills we had countless activities to offer the campers on a daily basis, so if you ever hear a camper complaining of nothing to do that hour it would only take a quick walk down to Cain’s Arena to look at the activity board for the camper to realise they had endless options of exciting activities to choose from!

At morning and afternoon meetings we write up the activities on offer each hour and the campers have free rein to choose which activity they want to do.

If you too don’t see your specialised skill listed in the most sought after jobs on offer, do not be disheartened, there is undoubtedly a place for you in the Camp America family!
