Who do you want to be when you grow up? - Josie's Camp America Experience.

Author -  Pops

Before I went to camp I didn’t really have a clue.

It was the summer after my first year of uni. My dear mother had persuaded me to try Camp America (she had spent a summer in the states when she was my age, and didn’t really want me hanging around the house annoying her for three months). To be honest, I was rather reluctant. I wanted to stay home, relax and hang out with my friends!

I was studying Sports Therapy. I originally wanted to be a Doctor - (I wasn’t clever enough and was far too lazy to try at that point) - Okay, next best, I’ll be a Physiotherapist - (I just missed my grades for this too). Okay, I wanted to go to uni! I’ll do anything. Hence, Sports Therapy.

I don’t think my heart was in it at all, and I think my mum saw that. So, off I went to camp. Stereotypical 19 year old girl, not really knowing where I was going in life. Studying something I didn’t really care about, spending weekends partying with friends and hanging out with a loser boyfriend.

And something happened that first summer at camp. I realised there was so much more. More places to go, more things to experience, more fascinating people I needed to meet. This continued over my next three years at camp. Each year became more and more transformative.

I realised I didn’t want to get stuck. I knew Sports Therapy wasn’t for me and so I finished my degree and upped and moved to Australia. And then here, to New Zealand. Camp made me realise I wanted to work with children, and help people on a deeper level. So far while travelling I have worked in so many different fields, but my experiences at camp have always brought me back to that vocation. I am going to work for the Red Cross.

So, while I might not be there yet, I am so much closer to achieving my goal thanks to camp.
